"Daddy?" said the voice again, and now I'm being poked in both cheeks. While I wouldn't trade being a father and a parent for anything in the world; there is one drawback for me in raising a Serpentine child, I'm outnumbered 4 to 2. Still poking my cheeks, H'hsssatt lifted both my eyelids with his upper thumbs. "Daddy, are you awake?" he asked.

"I am now; sshh or you'll wake Mommy up, too." I replied softly as he let go of my eyelids.

"Yeah, right." I thought to myself. How the pilot kept us under control was beyond my ability to understand. Half the squad was already dead and I figured the rest of us would be soon enough. The 'hostiles' had us targeted the second we started our entry burn and hit us with everything they could throw at us as soon as we were in range.

"Listen up, people, as soon as we land I want everyone out fast. Understood?" Captain M'Banga asked in a rock steady voice. He could've been discussing the last video he'd seen as calm as he was. &#

As I hustled across the parade field I tried to think of everything I'd done over the last week or so to warrant having to go see the boss. When I got to his office, his clerk thumbed his paw toward the Captain's door and said go right in. Squaring away my uniform, brushing off the nonexistent dust, buffing my boot toes on the back of my pant legs, I knocked.

"Enter." came the reply.

"Sir, Trooper First Class Johns reports as ordered!" I said in my best 'I didn't have anything to do with it' voice, clicking my heels
